Belgium granite mantel with wood and stucco overmantel (Reference 9485)
Monumental Neo-Renaissance style chimney piece with a Belgium granite mantel and wood and stucco overmantel from the 19th century. Powerful double scrolled jambs carved with modillions, protruding fluting, swirls and interlacing foliage, rise up to a richly adorned entablature. The front frieze presents a central curled up cartouche, and the heads more regular rectangular ones. Gadroons, modillions and acanthus leaves add to the entablature decoration. A wood and stucco overmantel creates a frame for a mirror or painting. Columns with Corinthian capitals adorned with acanthus leaves rise up on either side of the frame and support a cornice beautifully carved with geometrical curlicues, flowers and a central cartouche in relief. This chimney piece embodies the creativity of artists from the 19th century inspired by the Neo-Renaissance style who made its decorative language their own.
