This antique Louis XV style hearth in cast iron was made around 1900. In the central part, there is a scene inspired by the chinoiseries, very popular in the 18th century, like those of the famous François Boucher and whose this hearth in cast iron seems to refer.
Under stylized arches adorned with volutes and creatures, a mixture of Rococo and Chinese art, a man with typical clothes, is in the center of the attentions of the four servants around him. His superior position gets him close to the Emperor.
This attraction for chinoiseries begins in Europe as early as the 14th century but gets its golden age in the 18th century. This exotic inspiration, which quickly gets mixed up with rococo art, is at the origin of several eccentricities in art - notably by Antoine Watteau and François Boucher - as in other fields. The 19th century’s Orientalism and eclecticism perpetuate this exoticism.
On the outer plaques, the chinoiseries have given way to decorations quite Louis XV: medallions, in which are represented a portrait of a young girl and a cassolette, are adorned with multiple volutes of Rocaille inspiration.
