The décor of this antique fireback has religious connotations. The monogram “HIS” (abbreviation of the name Jesus in Greek) is repeated three times in three medallions, topped by a cross and with a crowned heart below. Winged cherub heads fly between the medallions. The date 1732 appears above, which brings us back to the Louis XV style and period. Firebacks were treated with utmost car during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, as this one attests.
