This antique mantel in the Louis XV style known as “Pompadour” was carved in pink Enjugerais marble. As in this example, Pompadour mantles often have canted jambs, and a slightly curved entablature and shelf. This model is called “a gorges” or “a panneaux” : on the jambs and entablature, long molded panels with lines that follow the curves of the structure, are carved on either side of central circular medallion type motifs.
With no hearth floor or insert. Pink Enjugerais marble is similar to Sarrancolin marble. Used in furniture and mantels since the early 18th century, the quarries are now closed.
