Stone Regence mantel, from the 18th century (Reference 1279)
18th century French Regence period mantel.
Fluted jambs rise up to a paneled entablature with at its center a cartouche surrounded by volutes of foliage. The design continues to be symmetrical like often in the Regence style.

Additional information
In this period most mantel pieces had plaster sides, which is the case here.
The dark paint dates from the time of the Revolution when noblemen often had their belonging painted black in sign of mourning.
Condition
