The Maison Lorin was founded in Chartres in 1863 by Nicolas Lorin (1815-1882), master glass painter, and taken over by his son Charles in 1882, at his father’s death. Very active, the Maison Lorin company created stained glass windows all over the country and in large cities throughout the world (Vienna, New York, Saigon). Today the Lorin Company is considered to be the oldest stained glass workshop in Chartres. The company has kept some 19th century equipment and accepts visitors.

The Lorin company quickly learned to work with talented artists, such as the painter of historical scenes Charles Crauk (who was the head of the company’s drawing studio, rue de Vaugirard in Paris) or Lionel Noël Royer, student of Cabanel and Bouguereau. Some of their work is in the cathedral in Chartres.
