Egyptian
The vogue of Egyptian style in decoration in Europe, known as Egyptomania, began with the archaeological discoveries of the second half of the 18th century. In France, Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt and Jean François Champollion’s deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphs fired the imagination of writers and artists who rediscovered this ancient culture and found inspiration for years to come. They created new forms full of grandeur, exoticism and mystery using motifs and shapes inspired by ancient Egypt, with symbols like the Sphinx, Pharaoh heads, ibis, obelisks, cobras, hieroglyphs, which were integrated into architecture, interior design and fashion.
