Renaissance
Period from the 15th to 16th centuries.
The Renaissance was a cultural movement that began in Italy and spread throughout the rest of Europe by the 16th century, born from the rediscovery – or rebirth as the name “renaissance” implies – of ancient Roman ideas and canons. In the arts, a major development was linear perspective coupled with the desire to represent nature and unveil the absolute codes of beauty. Stylistically, artists used the Antique decorative alphabet: fluted pilasters, columns with capitals, pediments, armors, etc. adding new motifs such as cartouches, garlands of flowers and swags. Mythological subjects set in classical architectural backdrops began replacing religious ones. The figures of Venus, Bacchus and Mars filled the walls of luxurious and comfortable interiors.
