Painted wood room paneling (Reference 9433)
Very beautiful set of painted wood paneling in the Empire style, circa 1915. The set is composed of different richly decorated panels assembled in squares and rectangles, with molding that underlines the structure. Each panel presents a delicate threepart décor of floral scrolls, foliage, grape leaves, palmettes, arabesques borrowed from the Roman decorative repertoire, an endless source of inspiration for the Empire style. Allegories dressed in Roman style adorn the center of the panels, while famous mythological characters in cartouches such as Venus, Pan or Diana decorate the sections below surrounded by grotesque imaginary animals, dolphins, griffins or winged sphinxes. These wood panelings are particularly representative of the Empire style in their absolute submission to antique Roman art codes, their structure with central female figures and the yellow and green colours were very stylish in that period.
