Cast iron fireback with woman and man (Reference 9448)
On hold
Elegant 18th century cast iron fireback. In a refined frame of curlicue foliage, behind a pulled curtain, a scene between two characters is being played out: a young woman dressed in Roman attire, sitting on a day bed, holds back a man who is trying to leave. The tragic departure is emphasized by the quality of the carving and expressive rendering of the characters, their movements, the folds of their clothes and their features, particularly the woman’s. The general composition is very alive and the craftsmanship bold.
Most likely an allegorical or mythological scene describing a couple being separated by circumstance.
Origin : France 18th century
