Cast iron fireback with Ceres and putti (Reference 9484)
18th century cast iron insert in the Regence style featuring Ceres the Roman goddess of agriculture, sister/wife of Jupiter and mother of Proserpina by him. She sits with a sickle in one hand and gives orders with the other had to four putti who are busy harvesting wheat. The scene is framed by an oval medallion supported by palm leaves tied with a ribbon, set against a rosette lattice work, the whole resting on a base of scrolls.
