Reclining Woman Fireback (Reference 9493)
Cast iron fireback from the early 19th century. A young woman dressed in a toga lies on a day bed; Two cherubs hovering above her, play with garlands of flowers under the benevolent gaze of their mistress, probably Venus. The scene is set in a frame of curlicue foliage. This beautiful composition is a testimony to the reign of Love and gallantry prominent in the Regence period in France.
