Campan
Since Antiquity the quarries of the area of Campan in the High Pyrenees in France have produced a few varieties of marble, among the most famous of hard stones: Ribbon Campan marble, Green Campan, the Campan Grand Mélange and not forgetting the Cherry Red variety called Rouge Griotte. All campan marbles are characterized by dark and very marked green veins. They were much used in the apartments in Versailles under the reign of Louis XIV for mantel pieces, but also wall panels because of the beauty of the motifs in the stone. The main decoration of the walls of the Escalier de la Reine in Versailles (the Queen’s stairs) uses Campan Vert and grand Mélange. .
