Pair of Vietnamese-style carved stone elephant statues
Dimensions
Width 22'' ½ 57cm
Height 31'' ½ 80cm
Depth: 11'' 28cm
Pair of monumental stone statues representing elephants, carved from a single block and each resting on a sculpted pedestal with low-relief decoration. The animals are shown standing, legs straight, in a static, ceremonial stance. The simplified modeling, rounded volumes, and stylized features of the heads — folded ears, curled trunk, sculpted forehead folds — are characteristic of traditional Vietnamese funerary sculpture. The bases are adorned with scrollwork and stylized petal motifs similar to those found at the imperial tombs in Huế, such as the Khải Định Mausoleum (1920–1931).
In Vietnamese culture, elephants symbolize strength, wisdom, and loyalty. These statues were most likely part of a votive or funerary ensemble marking a processional path or the entrance to a tomb. A circular hole at the top of one elephant suggests they originally supported an additional element (possibly a palanquin, vessel, or parasol), now missing.
