This antique Regence style fireback was made in the 18th century. Two Rococo -inspired shells adorn the upper corners while in a medallion surrounded by laurel branches intertwined is represented Circe making a beverage. Circe is a goddess from Greek mythology who prepare multiple potions which can make metamorphosis. A well-known passage from Homer's Odyssey tells how the enchantress transforms twenty-two of Ulysses' companions into swine.
