This 20th century fireplace made with blue-green stoneware and oak was designed by the Maison Gentil et Bourdet. The stoneware decoration framing the firebox features large Egyptian scarabs in high-relief as well as a leafy design. At the center of the overmantel, just above the mantelpiece, is a large circular flower ornament. Extending to the left and right of the center flower medallion, a knotted rope motif wraps around the sides on the entablature. The overmantel tapers upward in a similarly Egyptian-inspired pyramid shape and is decorated with a facade of plain stoneware tiles. This fireplace is an excellent example of the skill and innovation of the Maison Gentil et Bourdet which was founded in 1904 by two architects. Widely recognized for their terracotta ornaments and decorative ceramics in architectural works, the production from the Paris-based enterprise corresponds to two major art movements: Art Nouveau and later Art Deco. Many buildings throughout France began adapting their famous stoneware tiles or ceramic architectural elements, as can still be seen today. This fireplace was also featured in the furniture section of the Salon de L’Art Décoratif of 1904 organized by the Société des Artistes Francais. Gustave Soulier particularly praised this piece in the “monthly review of D’art Contemporain,” writing that “Mr. Gentil and Mr. Bourdet have made good use of stoneware-ceramics in the two fireplaces they exhibit.” p. 14

This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor but could be made to order (please ask for marble availability).
