This beautiful cast iron fireback bearing the coat of arms of the Kings of France (three Fleur de Lys azure) was destined for the military. Indeed, the coat of arms is flanked with military trophees (shields, rods, flags, pikes). The words around that frame the fireback are : "Les cheminées des Chambres des Officiers de la Citadelle de Verdun" (The mantels of the Officers’ rooms in the Citadelle of Verdun).
The coat of arms are topped with the Royal crown and the date 1701.
Firebacks decorated with this theme were made during the reign of Louis XIV. These were generally destined for use in barracks or forts, in the North or the East of France.
