"Offering to Eros" Fireback
Dimensions
Width 31'' ½ 80cm
Height 31'' ½ 80cm
Origin:
France, 18th century.
Status:
Good condition.
Square fireback with mythological scene in the Neo-classical Louis XVI style.
Dressed as a Roman, a woman kneels, presenting her young child to the God Eros (Love), easily recognizable with his bow and arrow. The God stands upon a fluted column pedestal, a bowl of incense sends smoke up behind him. This detail often symbolizes offerings or prayers to Antique gods.
This type of Antique imagery was very much in vogue during the reign of Louis XVI. Indeed, this was a period of charming pastoral subjects taken from Antiquity, also found in the paintings of Vien, the King’s painter, who loved to represent offerings to Eros.
The craftsmanship of this fireback is very delicate: the details and outlines of the characters are very clear, sign of a great quality of cast iron.
