This 19th-century Napoleon III style Carrara fireplace is attributed to Jules Cantini (1826-1916), a 19th-century sculptor and a marble worker.
The fireplace stands out because of its important size and detailed carvings that Carrara marble allowed. White Carrara marble, sometimes with gray veins, has brightening and delicacy qualities that enable the sculptor to work in fine detail.
Cantini has frequently worked with this material because he owned Carrara quarries in Italia, in the Apuan Alps, which is rare for a sculptor. The fireplace’s band is decorated with moldings mixed with vegetal ornaments such as palmettes/pelmets, daisies, roses, and cut leathers. It molds the fireplace’s contours. In the center of the band, a fine and asymmetrical central sculpture in high relief stands out. This sculpture in high relief highlights details of its center with vegetal and floral baroque patterns. The fireplace’s legs are adorned with a finely crafted shell that is lodged in the leg’s curves. The face of the leg is decorated with flowers in high relief with its leaves that stand out from the bottom of the structure. The sides of the console part of the leg are decorated, things especially rare at this location. A daisy in very high relief is sculpted here, not only on the inner side but equally on the outsider side. Legs bottom end with an acanthus leaf adorned with tree flower buds. The artist made an effort to steer the leaf tips in opposite directions, reinforcing the fireplace’s symmetry.
This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor but could be made to order (please ask for marble availability).
