The theme of the decoration of this Neo-Gothic style mantel is hunting and wildlife. Of Medieval dimensions, this mantel rises up above two double round columns, with angled capitals and bases.
The most remarkable aspect of this mantel is its extraordinary frieze that narrates in very high relief the legend of Saint Hubert, patron saint of hunters. Framed by two cornices this virtuoso piece of sculpture plays with light and shadow effects.
The shaft above the mantel piece is made in plaster with ogive columns and arches in flamboyant Gothic style surrounding a central painted panel. On a lozenge filled background decorated with Fleur-de-lys and powdered with ermines (the emblems of the King of France) is placed a coat of arms: gules with three clover d’or, chief argent, towered with a Wyvern d’or.

The decoration seems to indicate this mantel was made for a dining room. The fashion in the 19th century was to decorate dining rooms with Neo-Gothic mantels evoking culinary art.
This mantel is completed with a two-tone enameled checked insert, an iron curtain and a fire back decorated with powdered ermines.
