This Nubian torch-holder in carved and gilded polychrome wood stands on a hexagonal wooden base painted to imitate marble and adorned with a medallion bearing a coat of arms. Holding her robe in her right hand and a small bowl in her left, she adopts a contrapposto pose that reveals her right leg; her right shoulder and breast are likewise exposed.
Her polychrome robe, stuccoed and gilded, is decorated with floral motifs, rosettes, and Oriental-inspired scrollwork. These decorative elements are characteristic of Venetian production. Since the 12th century, Venice has been a key crossroads of the Mediterranean economy, acting as a major hub for trade between Europe and the Orient. It was therefore common for wealthy Venetian merchants to embellish their interiors with such ornamental pieces, reflecting a stereotyped vision of an idealised Orient and symbolising commercial prosperity. The coat of arms on the base of the statue could be that of an important Venetian family. The piece shows signs of normal wear due to its age.
