Walnut, Green Estours Marble. This dining room set is made up of a large buffet cabinet, a desert table, a dining table and six chairs. Bearing the mark of the cabinetmaker Verot, active in Paris from 1875, this Neo-Renaissance dining room set was carved out of walnut around 1880. The large buffet cabinet is made up of a lower cabinet decorated with attached colonnettes and panels carved in low relief with trophies. In the centre, four seasons are represented through women placed on the semicircular niches, Spring holds a bouquet of flowers, Summer carries the symbols of hay harvesting (sickle, sheaves of wheat etc), Autumn carries bunches of grapes and Winter transports a heap of firewood. The upper part of the buffet cabinet is decorated in the centre with a courteous scene carved in high relief, set in a beautiful countryside, a towered castle in the background, young men and women are gathered around a musician playing the mandolin. The credence dessert table is supported by two fluted jambs, that end with the busts of young women carved in full relief. The top of the desert table is made out of Green Estours marble, beautiful green veins on a cream background. The theme of grotesque features and fanciful animals is found all over the furniture of this dining room set, especially the salamander, emblem of François the first, decorating the lower part of the dining table.
The dimensions of the buffet cabinet are: H. 314 cm ; L. 216 cm ; D. 60.5 cm. The dimensions of the dessert table are: H. 158 cm ; L. 114 cm ; D. 49.5 cm.
