Height: 42'' ½  108cm

Circa 1900, France.

In good condition. Some usual restorations. The cat was manufactured recently.

This rare Art Nouveau ceramic fireplace was made around 1900 in the style of Hector Guimard, whose easily recognizable style was then famous.
The arch opening on the hearth is bordered by two jambs decorated with foliage and masks in the lower part. The center of the lintel is adorned with a curious cat with a round back and a muzzle of "duckbill" made in low-relief.
This cat appears as an evocation of the one that decorates the bottom of the angle turret of Castel Béranger, Parisian building realized in 1898 by Hector Guimard and marking the development of Art Nouveau in architecture. This same cat was also already visible on the pavilion designed by the architect for the Exhibition of Ceramics and Fire Arts in 1897.
The Cercle de Guimard, mentioning on its website a fireplace similar to ours, brings it closer to a work of ceramists Janin brothers & Guérineau.
