Very nice cast iron fireback from the eighteenth century, Louis XIV style , decorated with coats of arms of the Berthet de Gorze family : "azure, with three ears of golden wheat". Around the coat of arms, three wild boars and the family motto "Qui s'y frotte se pique" ("He who rubs up against it, there shall he be pricked").
Berthet de Gorze family comes from Saône-et-Loire in France where is their castle, the Castle of Gorze, which is located in Germolles-sur-Grosne. The castle was built in 1671 - 1672 by architect Paul Royers of Valfenière.
Berthet de Gorze knew an important social ascension during the sixteenth century, thanks to the military career of its famous members, including that of Philibert Berthet, infantry captain in the regiment of Uxelles. The Berthet de Gorze were great soldiers, which is affirmed by their motto "Qui s'y frotte se pique". Also, one of the piglets on the fireback supports a large sword, proof of this taste for the art of war.
The last Marchioness of Gorze, Marie Louise Victoire Berthet, died October 9, 1776.
