This exceptional cast iron garden statue was made after the Roman marble statue from the Ist-IInd centuries which is kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris and which comes from the former Borghese Collection.
Cupid, little putti with spread wings, is standing on the back of Centaur, half man half horse. The latter, arms tied behind the back, looks to Eros, in a twist of the torso with a powerful musculature.
The original marble statue comes from the former Borghese collection and was acquired by Napoleon I for the "Musée Napoleon", now Louvre Museum, in 1807.
The garden statue presented here was made out of cast iron in the late nineteenth century. The cast iron reproduction of ancient works is characteristic of the 19th-century Eclecticism with a taste for both the Antiquity and the new materials, what cast iron is. Thus the biggest foundries, such as those of Val d'Osne , Tusey or Durenne, present the most famous ancient works in their catalogs in order to offer reproduction and to adorn homes and gardens of rich amateurs. This "Old centaur teased by Eros" appears at number 533 of the Val d'Osne Foundry catalog.
