Antique 18th-century cast iron fireback with caduceus and cornucopias

This antique fireback was made in the 18th century. Representing the attributes of Fortune, it is framed by a frieze of eggs and darts and presents many finely executed details.
Under a royal canopy, the caduceus of Mercury, whose wings are recognizable, is crossed by two large horns of abundance filled with flowers. This association, symbolizing Fortune, Concord or Bliss, was used on the coins of several Roman Emperors, including Augustus and Marcus Antonius.
Two chimeric animal heads also enhance the composition. The serpents of the caduceus have bird's beaks, which recalls the representations of the alchemists, who used this symbol of success.
