This Napoleon III style fireplace was made out of wood and stucco and was realized in the 19th century. The mantelpiece and the carved overmantel recall the Louis XIII style fireplaces.
The goddess Diana, who adorns the great oval medallion of the overmantel, recalls here the Diane of Anet preserved in the Louvre Museum, a sculpture made in the 16th century for Diane de Poitiers where the goddess appears alongside a majestic stag. Goddess of nature and the moon, whose crescent adorns her forehead, Diana is also a huntress to defend her chastity. The deer can serve as a companion, but also refers to the legend of Actaeon, who surprised the divinity in the bath and was punished by a metamorphosis into a stag. This medallion of pressed cardboard has a delicate craft that is worthy of the poetry Diana's myth .
The wood and stucco mantel has many details, rows of pearls and square rosettes around the medallion, garlands of flowers and fruits and heads of animals that evoke nature. The top of the overmantel is decorated with a broken pediment typical of the Renaissance style, crowned with a cassolette filled with offerings. Two heads of dogs adorn the sides under the pediment, perhaps referring to Phrocion and Cyrus, the two hunting dogs of the goddess.
This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor but could be made to order.
