This antique Louis XV style firescreen was made in the 19th century. Its gilt bronze decoration is inspired by a painting by the French painter and aquafortist Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) who was a representative of the Rococo and of the eighteenth vogue for the "chinoiseries".
Thus, in the center of the firescreen, framed by multiple curves, a woman in Chinese costume plays on the swing over a pontoon with typical architecture. Multiple branches of flowers adorn the whole, and in the lower part, was chiseled a large shell.
The attraction for the chinoiseries develops in the 18th century and is associated with the Rococo and a certain eccentricity typical of the time. Watteau and Boucher will also be among the great artists of this genre, reflecting a completely fantasy Orient.
