L'ESCALIER DE CRISTAL - Large pedestal inspired by the Far East

Height: 37'' ⅜  95cm
Diameter: 17'' ¾  45cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

This large pedestal by L'Escalier de Cristal was made in the 19th century. The bronze medallion placed on the stretcher has a finely openwork decoration of Chinese-inspired decor: a dragon and a turtle in clouds.
Openwork medallions also take place on the apron. The entablature presents a Greek fret frieze, engraved in solid wood. The onyx tablet is framed in the wood. The pedestal rests on four claw-and-ball feet engraved with scrolls and decorated with openwork bronze.

Heir to the great Marchands Merciers in the 18th-century Paris, L'Escalier de Cristal was a famous house under the Restoration. It was probably created in 1802 by Mrs. widow Barthélemy Desarnaud, at No. 162 and 163, rue de Valois. Around 1830, the house is taken over by Boin, tailor, installed at 152-153, Valois gallery, then in 1840, by Pierre-Isidore Lahoche. In 1852, the latter joined his son-in-law, Emile-Augstin Pannier to create the Lahoche and Pannier Company, which became "Pannier, Lahoche et Cie" in 1867, when Isidore Lahoche retired from business.
In 1872, the store was moved close to the new Opera House, 6 rue Scribe and 1 rue Auber. Since 1885, it is directed by Georges and Henri, son of Emile Pannier: the Pannier Frères Company is thus created. Merchant-publisher, L'Escalier de Cristal produced small pieces of furniture and luxury items, often of Far Eastern taste as for the pedestal that we present here.
