This important antique fireback was made in the 17th century. It presents the coat of arms of a noble family, perhaps originating from Guyenne (Gascogne), where several families wore this eagle and this crescent. The shield is surmounted by a helmet with feathers, and a row of small masks punctuates the top of the fireback .
The acanthus leaf present in the bottom of the fireback is a posterior addition (plaster). This empty space originally served to evacuate the ashes from the hearth.
