Origin:
18th century from Belgium
Carved in Red Griotte marble from Belgium, with strong grey veins, the straight sober lines of the mantel are characteristic of the Directoire style. The entablature is adorned with laurel leaf swags, the heads of the jambs with fully open flower rosettes. In the front horizontal plate, curlicue foliage rises from a vase of flowers. The fireback hearth presents a romantic scene on the center plate and statues on the side ones, all surrounded by curlicue foliage and framed with strings of pearls.
The trumeau shown in these pictures is available as item #9608. The cast iron insert is included. The floor could not be salvaged.
