Rare pair of lead vases with dragon decor from the 1830's in the shape of monumental ewers. The vases are set on red marble bases; their pedestals are decorated with acanthus leaves. The vase widens into a full central shape adorned with gadroons, then curves in at the level of the collar and opens up into a spout top. The collar is embellished with a scale motif. The handles of the vases are shaped like dragons with spread wings and give the cachet and originality to the pair.
These Louis XIV style ewers refer to the Versailles garden ornamentations. Indeed the theme of the dragon or the winged serpent is very present in Versailles, particularly in the vases.
