A splendid antique mantel expressing the turbulent lines of the Louis XV and Rococo style. Volutes of foliage and arabesques dominate the mantel. A rich lush décor offers a number of delicately carved motifs, including the typically 19th century preference for combining shells and opulent foliage. The ornamental themes of this mantel are very rare. The front of the entablature is adorned with a central shell, displaying a lyre, a painter's palette, a mask - all attributes of the arts. The shell is set in the molding of the oxbow curved hearth opening below. The jambs are lushly covered with musical instruments of all kinds, panpipes, bagpipes, violins, trumpets... A very singular décor for a rare and unique mantel, which was most likely a private commission.
