Exceptional Italian walnut wood mantel, similar in technique to the work of Valentino Besarel. The jambs are caryatid figuring Atlantes wearing loincloths in high relief. The man on the left is bearded, the one on the right has a simple mustache; both are carved with muscular bodies - with remarkable artistry. They support the entablature, with its Grotesque curlicue pattern of intricate foliage and creatures, set against a hammered backdrop against which the bas relief figures shine. The center of the front is adorned with a chiseled bronze bas relief of an angel riding in a chariot driven by four dragonflies. The overmantel also bears an extraordinary wealth of sculpture. Two sheathed naked caryatids - one contemplative, the other smiling - flank a framed tapestry of a king and a queen in a chariot driven by a cherub and a deer, surrounded by a stylized floral design. The caryatids support a segmental broken pediment, a vase of flowers resting on drapes filling the apex.
Valentino Panciera BESAREL (Astragale de four Zoldo, July 29, 1829 - Venise, December 11, 1902) was an Italian sculptor and cabinet maker. He apprenticed with his father, in Belluno, learning antique sculpture. Besarel then worked in his home town until he moved to Venise in the 1860’s, where his reputation quickly grew, attracting commissions from all of Europe and many monarchies. He never stopped working even after an accident that cost him four fingers. Giovanni Battista Besarel (1801 - 1873), Valentino’s father, was a great sculptor who worked with famous architects, such as Segusini.
