A splendid antique Napoleon III style mantel. The straight upright jambs contrast with the curved molded and slightly recessed arched frame of the hearth opening. The jambs are designed like pilasters resting on a base board rising to a corbel. The corbels and the keystone of the arch are garnished with bronze ornaments with two-tone patina - gold and silver. Shaped like door knockers, the bronze on the jambs are mascarons of a woman, the one above the arch is a protome of a lion. The mantel is entirely chiseled : very elaborate candelabras cover the jambs, while interlacing foliage replete with flying griffins, fantasic sphinxes and delightful birds enliven the spandrels.
No insert or marble hearth floor.
