French black marble mantel with modillions in the Napoleon III style from the 19th century. This mantle is designed with straight jambs on block feet and a small capital, rising up to a simple entablature. The modillions carved with deep flutes end with scrolls and are set under the shelf. A small molded frame surrounds the hearth. The modillion mantel is a variation of the Capucine mantel. Black marble mantels have extra cachet and in this case the marble is French and speckled with splashes of white calcite. The white enameled insert is included.
