Cast iron fireback with horse rider (Reference 9502)
Cast iron fireback signed « P. MARTIN. C » from the early 19th century. Flanked by two columns topped with fire pots, a circle of pearls frames a rider on a rearing horse. The gentleman wears an ostrich feather hat, a cape, a ruffle neck collar, his hand rests on the hilt of his sword. Purely decorative, or in honor of a prominent member of a particular family, a delicately carved fireback.
