Fine black Belgium marble mantel in the Empire style from the 19th century. Powerful lion paw jambs resting on end blocks rise up to a deep scroll, draped with acanthus leaves. They support a very plain sleek entablature. The highly architectural design is enhanced by the choice of Belgium black marble with its deep homogeneous hue upon which light plays.
