The Anguissola and the Scotti families are from Piacenza, a town in Emilia-Romagna north or Florence. They are two of the most illustrious families from the town and formed many alliances together as early as the 14th century.
The arms of the Anguissola, on the left are: party per fess, indented, gules and argent.
The arms of the Scotti on the right: from Azur, a bend argent accompanied two golden stars. The Anguissola arms has a small circle towards the bottom. This detail indicates that the arms belong to a specific member of the family, a younger brother for example.
In the case of the mantel made out of Pietra Serena, the arms probably come from the result of a marriage between an Anguissola man and a Scotti woman. The woman’s arms were always placed on the right hand side.
