The Anguissola and the Scotti families are from
Piacenza, a town in Emilia-Romagna north or
Florence. They are among the most important
families of the town and passed many alliances
together as early as the 14th century.
The arms of the Anguissola, on the left are:
party per fess, indented, gules and argent.
The arms of the Scotti on the right: azure a bend
argent accompanied two stars or.
The Anguissola arms has a small circle in the
bottom of part. This detail indicates the arms
are of a specific member of the family a younger
brother for example.
In the case of this mantel, the arms are probably
those of a marriage between an Anguissola man and
a Scotti woman. The woman’s arms were always
placed on the right hand side.
