Baccarat, pair of vases with peacock, rooster and wader, c. 1880

This pair of vases with Japanese decoration of peacock, rooster and wading bird was made by the Baccarat crystal factory around 1880.

Founded under Louis XV, the French crystal factory Baccarat demonstrated its excellence at Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century.

These baluster-shaped vases in opaline glass have a gold enameled decoration partially in relief, and shaded with green and black.

Their decor is identical:

a peacock with outstretched wings stands on a tree, while on the ground, the rooster and the wader seem close to confronting each other.

The landscape is executed in the style of Japanese prints.

The neck and base of the vases are decorated with oriental motifs.

The whiteness and translucence of the opaline glass, as well as the finesse of the decoration, reveal the exceptional quality of this production.

The Marc Maison gallery has another pair of vases whose gold enameled decorations represent a Japanese landscape with Far Eastern fauna and flora.
