This pair of oval portraits was executed by Paul Soyer (1832-1903) in enamel, at the end of the 19th century.
These portraits, each depicting a bust of a woman in grisaille, match: the models are facing each other. The two women are wearing imposing hats adorned with feathers and roses, and are dressed in the fashion of the late 19th century. Although they look alike (they probably belong to the same family), their features are carefully individualised.
Very popular in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the use of enamel made a comeback in the 19th century. These pieces in particular stand out for their combination of grisaille and gold monochrome techniques, inherited from Claudius Popelin (1825-1892), the painter and enameller with whom Soyer trained.
