This French Regence style mantel is a perfect example of this style that marked the transition between Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. The straight lines are still strong along the jambs and in the carved and molded panels that rise up the jambs and end in spandrels on either side of the frieze of the entablature. This austerity is tempered by the rounded hearth opening and the folds of the central palm leaf motif.
The marble of this mantel is a very fine quality of white veined with a dense web of gay veins.
