Origin:
France 19th century
Napoleon III period and style mantel emblematic of the eclecticism in styles of the period. Made of oak, richly carved with motifs inspired by the Renaissance. The tapered corbel jambs, rising to scrolled slightly protruding heads, support a large entablature carved with rinceaux of foliage and acanthus leaves around a central cabuchon motif, called a “cuir” in French because of its resemblance to thick leather with rolled up sides. All these motifs are typical of the French Renaissance. The heads are adorned with square rosettes, with a wild aspect, a reinterpretation of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles rosettes. The entablature is crowned by a largely projecting classical cornice. The brass insert is exceptional. It is fully carved with elements also of Renaissance inspiration: rinceaux with lush foliage, grotesques and candelabra rising to masks of Chimera, lions supporting a mask crowned with a basket of fruit.
