This impressive antique Neo-Renaissance style mantel is carved in stone. Sculpted on all sides, it is composed of two jambs shaped like pilasters. These rise to Corinthian capitals, which are delicately carved out and adorned with faces of grotesque characters. They are garnished with bas-relief motifs from top to bottom: knotted ribbons, cabuchons and foliage. The large entablature is also fully carved in bas-relief, with symmetrical swirling ornaments of leaves. At its center, appears a Medieval style grotesque enmeshed in leaves. The overmantel offers a very unique décor of a hanging drape carved in trompe-l’oeil, behind a large cabuchon. At the center of this cabuchon rests a medallion decorated with a profile of a knight with a helmet. Two large fluted pilasters frame this décor. Above, the cornice is crowned by a pediment with a remarkable design of foliage rising up and beyond the scrolls.
