Description

Two carved oak panels from a series of four.
Carved in high relief, imaginary grotesque characters appear in the midst of intertwined branches and foliage. One panel depicts a winged devil and a dragon, the other a centaur and a drunkard. The style, type of characters and proportions are reminiscent both of the Gothic (imaginary characters) and Renaissance (the décor of foliage). The use of work, especially dark wood, enhances this similarity.

Additional information

The two other two panels, which are slightly wider (50"1/2) are item number 0348.
The panels were part of Boris Kochno’s collection. He was a friend of Christian Berard (illustrator, decorator and costume designer for the theater and ballets) and a collaborator of Diaghilev and the Russian ballets.
