This antique mantel from the Louis XVI period was carved in Red of Rance marble. The very sober design is typical of the Louis XVI style. Inspired by the ornamental and architectural vocabulary of Antiquity, the Louis XVI style represented a return to a quieter style after the very animated designs in vogue during the Louis XV period. The straight lines of this mantel are enhanced in a very subtle manner by carvings. Thus, the jambs are adorned with filleted flutes, the heads with square rosettes. The entablature, with a molded panel, is extremely plain.
