This Napoléon III period gilt-bronze billiard chandelier features two ends capped with opaline glass half-spheres set within richly ornamented gilt-bronze mounts. The original gas-lighting system has been adapted to accommodate a modern electrical installation. The historicist ornamentation is particularly elaborate and characteristic of the Napoléon III era. The decorative vocabulary draws on multiple historical references: Neo-Greek elements (palmettes), Neo-Gothic motifs (chimeras), Neo-Renaissance details (lion masks), and Rocaille forms (scrolls, acanthus leaves, and dolphins). With its imposing dimensions—nearly two meters in length—the chandelier originally provided ample illumination for billiard players, a game that gained great popularity during the 19th century. Today, it would make a striking statement in a refined interior.
