FRANCESCO LAZZARINI (1748-1808) – Winter, also known as The Chilly One, after Jean-Antoine Houdon

Until Étienne-Maurice Falconet's (1716-1791) Winter, the ice season was represented by a wrinkled old woman. In contrast to this conception, Lazzarini revisited Jean-Antoine Houdon's (1741-1828) famous allegory of winter, replacing the elderly woman with a semi-nude young woman. While inspired by Houdon's model, Francesco Lazzarini introduced some variations: the vase cracked by frost disappears, replaced by a long cloak that falls to the ground on the back of the statue. A small fire flickers in front of the figure, whose sensuality is more restrained than that of the model that inspired it. In 1780, Lazzarini was appointed honorary professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. In the last decade of the 19th century, he was in contact with the Polish court for which he created a Tancred and Clorinda, now installed in the Izabela Czartoryska Park in Puławy, south of Warsaw.
