Louis LONATI, Pair of Vases with tritons and fauns decor, with their original bases

This nice pair of vases comes from the personal residence of Louis Lonati (at 16 rue Alphonse Mairey, in Dijon) classified in the general inventory of cultural property. The contractor Louis Lonati, concrete specialist, who participated in the construction of several buildings in Dijon, built his villa in 1926. Italian born, his house resumes the Florentine style codes with use of modern materials such as concrete, while using an Art Deco decor.

Porcelain and gilded bronze clock set with griffin

Clock set consisting of five pieces, a clock and two pairs of cassolettes, made in gilded bronze and porcelain in the 19th century. Two winged griffins adorn the upper part of the clock, while the protomes of griffins are found on the handles of the cassolettes. The syncretism of various stylistic influences is characteristic of the Napoleon III style.

This Rocaille style garden table was created at the beginning of the 20th century. Made of polychrome cement, the foot imitates a tree trunk and the top imitates a slice with the growth rings.

Napoleon III style clock, in Sèvres night blue porcelain and gilded bronze

Night blue porcelain from Sèvres and gilded bronze clock, made in the 19th century. Clock with cupids , a white enamelled dial with Roman numerals adorned with an angel, two ram's heads on the sides and two covered vases decorated with gallant scenes. Dial signed "Au vase de Sèvres 15 Bd Montmartre Paris".

Gabriel Viardot (attributed to), Japanese table with bones birds marquetery, circa 1870-1880

This japanese table, made of tainted sycamore in the last decades of the 19th century, is attributed to the Parisian furniture maker Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906), specialized in the creation of Chinese and Japanese inspired furntiure. It's during the 1867 World Fair where he discovered the Japanese Art, the Gabriel Viardot decided to devote himself to “Chinese-Japanese style furniture”. It’s with this production that he was awarded a silver medal at the World's Fair of 1878. His furniture was produced thanks to lacquered and carved panels sent directly from China or Japan and decorated with mother of pearl inlays from Tonkin. He enlivened his furniture with bronze decorations, of which he made all the designs by hand. In 1885, he participated in the World Exhibition of Antwerp where he obtained a gold medal. At this time, the shop employed 90 – 100 workers, sculptors or cabinetmakers, a lot of who were educated directly by Gabriel Viardot. Following this exhibition, Gabriel Viardot was promoted to the rank of Knight in the Legion of Honor (December 29 1885). In 1889, he was at the World Exhibition that took place in Paris and awarded a gold medal. He obtained the same award at the World's Fair of 1900. The furniture maker is making here, a very beautiful table of which the shape and the decors are inspired by the Far East esthetic. The slab with enrolled edges is adorned on its central part with an important inlaid decoration of bones depicting birds on cherry tree branches. It rests on a very worked foot receiving a carved and open work decor as bronze pieces with high quality carving, typical of the furniture maker's work. The feet with sharp claws sculpted in the wood support on their middle an open work strut.

Concrete garden furniture attributed to Willy Guhl

Four-pieces living room by Swiss designer Willy Guhl from the 1950s in natural fiber cement. « Willy Guhl was an inventor, an experimenter, a resercher and a visionary. Despite that, he did not get lost in utopia. He reveals himself to be pragmatic almost a genius. » Robert Haussman Willy Guhl was part of these historical designers historiques who have contributed to the international reputation of the Swiss design. He was one of the big representative of Neo-Functionalism. From a carpenter father, he follows a furniture maker formation in the Kunstgewerbeschule of Zurich – School of applied arts of Zurich here he teaches from 1941 -, and becomes the director of the interior architecture department 10 years after. He leads in the late 1940's pionneer reaserches in the plastic furniture field. He develops then a knowledge about moulding technical that we allow him to reveal himself by transposing them on a new material : the Eternit, also called fibercement, which he is one of the first to use in Europe. The Eternit is a kind of cement reinforce by asbestos and with a fiber texture which allows to create audacious pieces with new shapes. It takes the aspect of larges slabs to which it is possible to give a shape as long as they are not dried. Produced in the origin for the industry, it's a cheap material with an important resistance, so perfectly adapted for the fabrication of external furniture.
