Style Japonism, Chinoiserie / Ref.11441

Gabriel VIARDOT (1830-1906) (attributed to) - A major Japanese wardrobe with large marquetry panels

Dimensions:
Width: 62'' ⅝  159cm
Height: 100'' ⅜  255cm
Depth: 21'' ⅝  55cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

Large armoire richly decorated in Far Eastern style. It opens with two doors, each decorated with a Japanese panel adorned with birds such as hens, partridges and roosters in carved bone into a flowery landscape. These panels, of Japanese origin, are reused from pre-existing furniture. The richness of the decoration of these panels makes all the decorative quality of this cabinet.

The cornice of the latter is decorated with a dragon and an asymmetrical frieze. The side panels and the apron are decorated with engraved bamboo.

This armoire is very characteristic of the Japanese fashion that France experienced at the end of the 19th century. This taste for exoticism was manifested in particular in the eclectic interior design by wealthy collectors.
